The vast majority of Telecom mobile customers will need to spend more to qualify for 'free' music through a partnership with streaming music service Spotify, an analyst says.
Vodafone spokeswoman Michelle Baguley said it was approached by Spotify 'some time ago' but decided to turn down a partnership. It offers a music app but Baguley said it would have information about a new offer soon.
Customers who buy Telecom's $29 prepaid add-on pack and post-paid customers on plans costing $59 or more will get free Spotify Premium subscriptions which usually cost $12.99 a month.
Telecom would not say how many of its customers would qualify for the free Spotify accounts. But IDC Research analyst Glen Saunders doubted it would be a large proportion. Telecom's $29 ultra mobile pre-paid pack only had the advantage over Telecom's more popular $19 plan that it offered an extra 50 minutes of talk time, he said.
Instead, it was a clever move by Telecom to 'upsell' customers to more expensive plans, he said. Telecom would not say how much it was paying Spotify to offer the freebie. Retail boss Chris Quin said it would be a bonus for customers that he hoped would attract more people to Telecom.
Swedish-founded Spotify is the world's best-known 'all-you-can-eat' music streaming service, with 24 million customers around the world. It offers 20 million tracks - almost all the music you can think of - which can be streamed or downloaded over mobile broadband or home wi-fi connections and played on internet-connected devices such as computers, tablets, iPods and smartphones.
Because many HiFi and home speaker systems now have wireless connectivity options such as Bluetooth that allow them to receive music from internet-connected devices, Spotify and rival services such as United States-based Rdio can provide a complete alternative to maintaining a CD collection.
